We Are Ready, We Are Respectful and We Are Safe.

Information for Parents/Carers

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS) which is based upon four themes and principles:

  • Unique Child – every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured
  • Positive Relationships – children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • Enabling Environments – children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and carers
  • Learning and Development – children develop and learn in different ways.

The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

The Curriculum – there are 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas of learning:

Prime Areas

  • Communication and Language
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Phonics

In Nursery we learn the skills required to succeed in Reception where children will begin systematic synthetic phonics through thr Read, Write, Inc. program.

We learn to distinguish between, talk about and replicate, Environmental Sounds, Instrumental Sounds, Body Percussion, Rhythm and Rhyme, Alliteration and Voice Sounds.

When children are secure with these skills we move onto learning how to orally blend and segment sounds in words, and begin exploring the picture sound cards to prepare children for phonics teaching in Reception, ensuring they get the best start to their education.

Once children are secure in phase 1, they will move onto phase 2 and begin the Read Write Inc. phonics program.

Homework

Homework will go home every Friday and be expected to be handed in the following Friday.
Phonics

As a school we teach Phonics using Read Write Inc.

Reading

Reading with your Child at home is so important.

Each week your child will be sent home with Read Write Inc Storybooks and Book Bag books linked to their current learning. These books should be read more than once to develop fluency and familiarise children with tricky words (red words) in order for them to become confident in decoding.

Reading Records

We ask that you read at home with your child each night for approximately 15 minutes and write a comment in their reading record books each time your child reads at home. We would ask you read no more than a few pages each time and spend time discussing the story and asking your child questions in order for your child to fully understand the books. Please try and read your child’s home reading book more than once so ensure they fully understand the text.

Homework

Your child will be given homework which will enhance the curriculum that they are following in school and will help to improve their learning. We greatly appreciate parental support and encourage parents to become involved in their children’s learning. Research has shown that support from home significantly improves a child’s achievement in school. English and Maths homework will be sent home usually on a Friday for completion by the following Thursday. Children may also be sent additional homework or research projects linked to their current learning. This will be shared with parents on Class Dojo.

Reading

To help your child develop a love of reading, all children are given daily opportunities to read either during Read Write Inc Phonics, Shared Reading, Independent Reading or Reading for Pleasure sessions. Your child should bring their school reading book and reading record to school every day so books are available for adults to read with pupils as often as possible.

All children will read with the class teacher at least once a week. The expectation is that your child should read for 15 minutes per day to develop their pace, fluency and understanding of a range of texts. Children who are still accessing Read Write Inc Phonics will be sent home with books that link to their current learning and are 100% phonetically decodable. Once children have completed Read Write Inc, they will be assessed using Accelerated Reader and will be sent home with a book of their choice from our school library.
