History

History at St Charles’ Catholic Primary School

At St Charles Catholic Primary School, we stimulate children’s interest and understanding about life in the past. We are passionate about building a vocabulary rich and varied curriculum, enriching children’s understanding through meaningful experiences and enabling them to share their ideas, in written form, through oracy, digitally and creatively. Our children will also learn about the lives and achievements of significant people from the past

Intent

Our intent is to spark a life-long love of History: enriching our children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of the past to enable them to learn its lessons and become the historians of the future!

We look back to explore how ancient civilisations have shaped the world and different cultures and examine significant events and eras in British history. This knowledge allows children to appreciate how a democratic and multi-cultural Britain has evolved whilst developing a deep understanding of chronology. Children learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multicultural Britain and celebrate their uniqueness as individuals. We make meaningful links to other curriculum areas: for example, using our Geography knowledge to understand History as time and place; or the Arts with the examination of creative outputs from communities around the world.

The teaching and implementation of the History Curriculum at St Charles Catholic Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and supported by the Rising Stars Scheme of work, ensuring a well-structured approach to this subject.

We follow a clearly sequenced and progressive program of study based on the National Curriculum objectives. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for History; providing a broad and balanced curriculum that encompasses the British Values throughout; ensuring the development of historical concepts, knowledge and skills; and for the children to study life in the past. Our history curriculum builds cultural capital of all individuals through visits, visitors and curriculum theme days to enhance history topics.

Succinct assessment based on key milestones supported by the Rising Stars scheme ensures learning is well pitched and matched to individual needs.

Impact

The ultimate impact and measure of the History curriculum at St Charles is to ensure that our children are equipped with historical skills, knowledge and understanding that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.

We have confident and enthusiastic children, who are assured in their ability to showcase their historical knowledge to peers and adults using subject specific vocabulary and in-depth knowledge and understanding. All children are given equal opportunities to succeed through collaborate learning and ongoing formative assessment from teaching staff.
