London for free - Cheap self-guided Bus Tour

This half term we will be learning about wheels and axles. We will be creating our our moving bus, based on the design of the famous red bus in London. 

Mechanisms: Wheels and axles

In this topic, children are given the opportunity to problem solve and experiment with mechanisms to help them develop a clear understanding of how they work. The children assume the role of a mechanic and troubleshoot why certain wheels don’t rotate. They then demonstrate their learning by designing and building their own moving vehicles.

Sculpture and Mixed Media

Children will create sculpture, pop art and learn how to draw facial features to portray different emotions, all through the topic of comic superheroes and with inspired by the works of Roy Lichtenstein.

Structures 

 

Using the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as inspiration, children help poor Baby Bear by making him a brand new chair. When designing the chair, they consider his needs and what he likes and explore ways of building it so that it is a strong and stable structure and doesn’t break again!

Formal Elements and Tone

 

Exploring the formal elements of art: pattern, texture and tone; children will create printed patterns using everyday objects; take rubbings using different media and learn how to make their drawings three dimensional.

Food: A Balanced Diet 

 

Through their exploration of what makes a balanced diet, children taste test food combinations of different food groups. They will also aim to make a wrap that includes a healthy mix of protein, vegetables and dairy, and learn about the term ‘hidden sugars’.
